10 LIES ABOUT GOD

$13.22

Is there more than one path into God's presence?
Is God obligated to save followers of other religions?
Does God know our decisions before we make them?

Answers to these questions aren't always readily apparent--can anyone be certain? Sometimes the answers seem inconsequential--do the answers really matter? But sometimes answers contain half-truths and deceptive beliefs that challenge our understanding of God, faith, and the Bible. Many of these deceptive beliefs have now moved from the popular culture into the church.

Dr. Erwin Lutzer, one of America's leading pastors and Bible teachers, believes that the more clearly we see God, the more clearly we can see ourselves. Working from this basic idea, he examines ten misconceptions about God that threaten to cloud our understanding of Him. In this revealing book, Dr. Lutzer challenges these all-too-common notions and promotes biblically-sound beliefs, while helping us forge a stronger, deeper relationship with God.

101 QUESTIONS & ANSWERS ON THE FOUR LAST THINGS

product image
$12.95

Joseph Kelley has written a short, accessible, thorough introduction to, and overview of, Christian teaching on death, judgment, hell and heaven, called in theology the "four last things." Presented in the popular 101 Questions format, this book shows how these four topics, also referred to as "Christian eschatology," have their ancient roots in the sacred books of the Hebrew Scriptures, especially in the later writings known as apocalyptic literature. The New Testament receives and builds upon Jewish thought and piety, finding in Jesus Christ a new revelation about the meaning of death, the nature of judgment, and God's desire that all be saved and united through Christ in heaven. Kelley clearly presents the major theological ideas about the four last things that have emerged in Christian history, as well as the sacramental and pastoral practices surrounding death. This one-step guide to Catholic teaching on death, judgment, heaven, and hell is a one-of-a-kind book and will make informative, fascinating reading.

ABIDING IN THE INDWELLING TRINITY

product image
$17.95

Christianity was meant by Jesus to be a living experience of being in the Trinitarian community--of being loved infinitely by the Father, in His Son Jesus Christ, through his Holy Spirit. In the earliest centuries of Christianity, theologians--especially in the East--thought, taught, and believed mystically about the Indwelling Trinity that lived with and transformed Christians into divinized children of God. The East still offers a rich model of participating in God's presence and experiencing the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit. Fr. Maloney approaches this mystery of the Trinity as a dynamic movement of God toward us through His two hands, in the words of St. Irenaeus, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. By drawing insights from Holy Scriptures, the Eastern Fathers, and mystics of all ages, Abiding in the Indwelling Trinity offers an intriguing vision of God as invading Love.

ABOUNDING IN KINDNESS WRITINGS FOR THE PEOPLE OF GOD

product image
$24.00

Elizabeth Johnson is widely regarded as among the most influential and creative Catholic theologians in the world--particularly for her contributions in bringing a feminist perspective to the central themes of Christian faith. Among her books are path-breaking works on God, Jesus, the church, Mary, and the communion of saints. In many cases she has also treated these themes in essays and lectures addressed to the wider "people of God." This volume is the first collection of these writings. It offers an overview of her essential work, but at the same time, given the range of her concerns, a brilliantly fresh exploration of the Christian faith.

AFTER LIVES: A GUIDE TO HEAVEN HELL & PURGATORY

$19.95

One of the most profound, deeply affecting questions we face as human beings is the matter of our mortality--and its connection to immortality. Ancient animist ghost cultures, Egyptian mummification, late Jewish hopes of resurrection, Christian eternal salvation, Muslim belief in hell and paradise all spring from a remarkably consistent impulse to tether a triumph over death to our conduct in life.

AFTER OUR LIKENESS

$28.00

In After Our Likeness, the inaugural volume in the Sacra Doctrina series, Miroslav Volf explores the relationship between persons and community in Christian theology. The focus is the community of grace, the Christian church. The point of departure is the thought of the first Baptist, John Smyth, and the notion of church as "gathered community" that he shared with Radical Reformers. Volf seeks to counter the tendencies toward individualism in Protestant ecclesiology and to suggest a viable understanding of the church in which both person and community are given their proper due. In the process, Volf engages in a sustained and critical ecumenical dialogue with the Catholic and Orthodox ecclesiologies of Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger and the metropolitan John Zizioulas. The result is a study that spells out a vision of the church as an image of the triune God.

AGAINST ALL GODS

$15.00

The father of the intelligent design movement, Phillip Johnson, thinks the new atheists are right! How? They've put serious discussion about God back on the public agenda. Despite their conclusions, folks like Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris and Daniel Dennett are asking the right questions. They're making belief in any religion an issue again, especially in the university context where, for decades, questions about faith and reason have been taken off the table for serious discussion. Open debate is exactly what we need on the topics of God, evolution and creation. Together Johnson and John Mark Reynolds help us see the unique opportunity these vociferous and even evangelistic atheists are creating in their attempt to convert us to their unbelief. The authors show that we need not fear or react against these challenges. Rather they point to better ways to engage the opinions of this new, aggressive form of antireligious activity. With skill and insight they energetically take on the question of whether the evidence leads to a materialistic naturalism or points toward a creator God. Be informed. Be encouraged. Join the discussion.

ALISTER E MCGRATH & EVANGELICA

$29.99

Alister McGrath is one of the premier evangelical theologians of our day. In this book, leading evangelical scholars, including Gabriel Fackre, John Frame, William Abraham, Gerald Bray, and Clark Pinnock, use McGrath's work as a lens through which to offer a contemporary assessment of evangelical theology. The volume sets McGrath in context and argues that a dynamic brand of evangelical theology-such as what his thinking represents-is necessary for the evangelical wing of the church to be semper reformanda (always reforming). Chapters focus on the essence, identity, strengths, weaknesses, and future of evangelical theology, offering a snapshot of a movement in transition.

AMBIVALENCE OF THE SACRED

product image
$30.95

Terrorists and peacemakers may grow up in the same community and adhere to the same religious tradition. The killing carried out by one and the reconciliation fostered by the other indicate the range of dramatic and contradictory responses to human suffering by religious actors. Yet religion's ability to inspire violence is intimately related to its equally impressive power as a force for peace, especially in the growing number of conflicts around the world that involve religious claims and religiously inspired combatants. This book explains what religious terrorists and religious peacemakers share in common, what causes them to take different paths in fighting injustice, and how a deeper understanding of religious extremism can and must be integrated more effectively into our thinking about tribal, regional, and international conflict.

$22.00

Why Christian understandings of Jesus and God clash with American Indian worldviews. "Tink" Tinker of the Osage Nation describes the oppression suffered by American Indians since the arrival of European colonists, who brought a different worldview across the ocean and attempted to convert the native population to the religion they also imported. The methodology, language, and understandings of Christian beliefs of the colonists????????????????????????and the majority society since the colonial period????????????????????????have largely failed to Christianize the native population. Different conceptual frameworks and different understandings of terms made (and make) Christian doctrine particularly unappealing and at times incomprehensible to Indians.

AN UNPUBLISHED MANUSCRIPT ON PURGATORY

$18.90

At the expressed desire of the Directors of the Bulletin "Notre Dame de la Bonne Mort," this pamphlet is published with all the reservations ordered by the Church in the decree of Urban VIII, and as a purely historical document. It was sent to that periodical by a zealous and devout missionary and is a pious document based on alleged conversations between a nun and a soul in Purgatory. No one can deny off-hand the possibility, or in fact, the reality of such apparitions of souls in Purgatory to persons still living. Such apparitions are not rare and there are many accounts of them. They are of frequent occurrence in the lives of the Saints. We will quote only one example from the life of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. She says: "When I was praying before the Blessed Sacrament on the feast of Corpus Christi, a person enveloped in fire suddenly stood before me. From the pitiable state the soul was in, I knew it was in Purgatory and I wept bitterly. This soul told me it was that of a Benedictine, who had once heard my confession and ordered me to go to Holy Communion. As a reward for this, God permitted him to ask me to help him in his sufferings. "He asked me to apply to him all I should do or suffer for a period of three months. Having obtained my superior's leave, I did what he asked. He told me that the greatest cause of his sufferings was that in life he had preferred his own interests to those of God, in that he had been too attached to his good reputation. His second defect was lack of charity to his brethren. The third was his all too natural attachment to creatures. It would be difficult for me to describe what I had to endure during those three months. He never left me and seeing him, as it were on fire and in such terrible pain, I could do nothing but groan and weep almost incessantly. My superior, being touched with compassion, told me to do hard penances, particularly to take the discipline . . . After the three months I saw the soul radiant with happiness, joy, and glory. He was about to enjoy eternal happiness, and in thanking me he said he would protect me when with God." The testimony of theologians and of historical documents are not less numerous or convincing, but let it suffice for us to mention Canon Ribet's Divine Mysticism, (Vol. II, Ch. VIII) and the other outstanding works of this master of mystical theology.

ANATOMY OF MISREMEMBERING VON BALTHASARS RESPONSE TO PHILOSOPHICAL MONDERINTY

$39.95

This compelling work is the most comprehensive and sophisticated account to date of the relationship between Hans Urs von Balthasar a Swiss theologian and Catholic priest and the German philosopher Georg Hegel. While underscoring the depth and breadth of Balthasar s engagement with the philosopher, author Cyril O Regan argues that Balthasar is the most concertedly anti-Hegelian theologian of the 20th century. For him, it is essential to engage Hegel because of his corrections of sclerotic forms of premodern Christian thought, but even more importantly to resist and correct his systematic thought, which represents a comprehensive misremembering of the Christian thought, practices, and forms of life. An important and original work, this book addresses a topic that puts the possibility of an authentic postmodern theology at stake."

ANCIENT & POSTMODERN CHRISTIANITY

$24.99

The consensual roots of Christianity found in the common understanding of the faith among the early church fathers is the foundation on which the church can and should build in the twenty-first century. Edited by Kennth Tanner and Christopher A. Hall, the eighteen essays found in this volume span theological and ecclesiastical perspectives that emphasize what the various Christian traditions hold in common. This shared heritage is applied to a wide range of topics--from worship and theology to ethics and history and more--that point the way for the people of God in the decades ahead. Ancient & Postmodern Christianity is created in honor of Thomas C. Oden, who has done much in recent decades to promote these ideas with such signal publications as After Modernity . . . What? and the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture, which was launched under his editorial direction. Contributing scholars include Richard John Neuhaus, Alan Padgett, J. I. Packer, Wolfhart Pannenberg, Carl Braaten, Stanley Grenz, Bradley Nassif, Thomas Howard and more. Here is a volume that will set a course needed for succeeding generations to restore and renew a living orthodoxy.

ANCIENT NEAR EASTERN THEMES IN BIBLICAL THEOLOGY

$18.99

Ancient Near Eastern Themes in Biblical Theology traces the many parallels between the Old Testament (and Bible as a whole) and the ancient Near East, including creation and flood narratives, common literary and legal forms, supposed acts of deities and the God of the Bible, and more. Instead of merely studying a random selection of parallels, however, Jeffrey Niehaus proposes that they represent "a shared theological structure of ideas in the ancient Near East, a structure that finds its most complete and true form in the Old and New Testaments." This comprehensive and enlightening resource promises to help students and discerning Bible readers to intellectually grasp and appreciate the overarching story of the Bible within its cultural development.

AND MAN CREATED GOD

product image
$14.95

A debate of perennial interest, addressing one of the oldest questions posed to religious believers—if God made everything, who made God?

Most recently leveled by the New Atheists, the question of the likelihood that God is a human invention was first asked in ancient Greece and has preoccupied religious believers for centuries ever since. Here, renowned scholar Robert Banks explores the history of this objection—from its earliest vocalization in the ancient world to its most famous advocates, including Freud, Marx, and others—and offers compelling evidence that takes both sides of the argument into account. Ideal for those with a general interest in New Atheism or for those studying religion, this informative guide will offer readers the chance to sort out once and for all what—if any—elements of their idea of God are man-made.

AND NOW I SEE...

$29.95

Christianity is, above all, a way of seeing. What unites figures as diverse as James Joyce, Caravaggio, John Milton, the architect of Chartres, Dorothy Day, Dietrich Bonhoeffer and the later Bob Dylan is a peculiar and distinctive take on things, a style, a way, which flows finally from Jesus of Nazareth. Origen remarked that holiness is seeing with the eyes of Christ. Teilhard de Chardin said, with great passion, that his mission as a Christian thinker was to help people see. And Thomas Aquinas said that the ultimate goal of the Christian life is a beatific vision, an act of seeing. This book is about coming to vision through Christ. Robert Barron, from the Prelude"
