This unique collection of six letters written by Denise Ackermann to family and friends both living and dead is one woman's account of her life, faith, and work as an Anglican theologian during South Africa's apartheid years and afterwards. ANATOMY OF SURVIVAL

    $17.95

Born the illegitimate daughter of Russian parents (her father was a spy), Una Kroll trained early as a doctor and then became a nun. She met her husband Leo who was then a monk in the African missions, and they eloped. It was not long before she became the leader of MOW, Movement for the Ordination of Women, and a veritable heroine for thousands of devout women who wanted to use their ability, energy, and intelligence for the Church. Her husband died and she now lives the life of a religious and a priest (she was one of the first to be ordained) under solemn vows taken before Archbishop Rowan Williams, who contributed the foreword to this book. It is in one sense an autobiography, and in another a treatise on both surviving and bereavement, from a woman who has survived abuse as a child, rejection by the church, a miscarriage, and the death of her husband. The resulting book is full of common sense and faith. She is down-to-earth and realistic, and completely devoid of self pity. Kroll has important lessons to teach us, and she does so with dignity and insight.

    ANTHOLOGY OF SACRED TEXTS BY

    $22.50

In 1895 Elizabeth Cady Stanton and her "Revising Committee" produced The Woman's Bible, a commentary on passages in the Bible that "do not exalt or dignify women" and "those also in which women are prominent by exclusion." The women's movement has come a long way in the last hundred years, but so too have our knowledge and appreciation of religions other than Judaism and Christianity. Serinity Young's Anthology of Sacred Texts by and about Women is the first comprehensive comparative sourcebook on women and religion. It makes available readings by and about women from the primary texts of the world's religions. The religions treated include not only the "big seven, " Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism, but the religions of northern Europe, the Ancient Near East, Greece, and Rome, shamanism and tribal religions, as well as more recent alternative religious movements. Each chapter begins with a brief introduction to the religion in question, providing a historical overview with particular regard to women. Then follow representative texts about women (each with its own introduction) from works that are central to their respective traditions. These texts include creation stories, biographies of founders (in which women often play a prominent role), law codes, folklore and fairy tales, the "texts" of tribal peoples, and works explicitly by women. Folklore and fairy tales have particular importance in this book because they generally reveal the beliefs of the "little tradition, " which are often in the hands of women, while the "great tradition" is represented by the male-dominated forms of orthodoxy. The works by women here take many forms fromtheological treatises to mystical poems to poems mourning the loss of a child or husband to the matter-of-fact statements by tribal women, such as Nisa, expressing the uncertainties of any religious knowing. Many of the texts included in this anthology are not only "representative texts a

    ARE WOMEN HUMAN

    $10.00

    Introduction by Mary McDermott Shideler
One of the first women to graduate from Oxford University, Dorothy Sayers pursued her goals whether or not what she wanted to do was ordinarily understood to be "feminine." Sayers did not devote a great deal of time to talking or writing about feminism, but she did explicitly address the issue of women's role in society in the two classic essays collected here.
Central to Sayers's reflections is the conviction that both men and women are first of all human beings and must be regarded as essentially much more alike than different. We are to be true not so much to our sex as to our humanity. The proper role of both men and women, in her view, is to find the work for which they are suited and to do it.
Though written several decades ago, these essays still offer in Sayers's piquant style a sensible and conciliatory approach to ongoing gender issues.

    ATHENA'S DISGUISES

    $19.00

In this wise and perceptive book, Susan Ford Wiltshire explores the multitude of ways mentoring occurs in our lives: through serendipitous contacts with friends, family, children, elders, artists, community peacemakers - even chance encounters with strangers. Using inspiring examples of several remarkable women who touched her own life. Wiltshire shows that mentors often are not recognized as such at first, and, in some cases, not until many years after their contributions are made. This book demonstrates how women can adapt to circumstances and fate in pursuing their intellectual and spiritual development.

    AUTHENTIC CATHOLIC WOMAN

    $13.99

What does it mean to be a woman today? Is there a one-size-fits-all answer? How can a woman be truly Catholic and truly feminine, hard-working and creative, and yet be at peace within? How does she nurture life at home, at school, on the job or in the culture?
In this profound yet practical guide, Genevieve Kineke invites women to consider the Church, the Bride of Christ, as the model for authentic Catholic womanhood. "The mission of women is inscribed in the mystery of the Church," Pope John Paul II said. The author explores facets of this mysterythe Church as mother, bride, spouse and teacher, as sacramental, as font of wisdom, source of culture, and life-giving sanctuaryand reveals how women mirror the Church in their core identity.
Faithful to this authentic identity, women will play a critical role in rebuilding a civilization of love and life. "

    AWAKENING TO PRAYER: WOMANS PERSPECTIVE

    $11.95

Awakening to prayer is to notice the intimacy between all aspects of your life and God. Awakening to prayer is to become increasingly conscious of the most holy Mystery to whom we are invited and encouraged to relate. From the Prologue
The word "prayer' is almost as generic as food or book, says Clare Wagner in Awakening to Prayer: A Woman s Perspective, and the varieties of prayer forms are countless. In this best and worst of times, Wagner writes, it is intriguing to ponder how women of the twenty-first century pray and enter into a relationship with Holy Presence. At this moment of enormous change, rapid technological advancement and a new relationship between faith and science, Wagner says we are called to see prayer in new, creative ways.
To help us see anew, she draws on the wisdom of the Scriptures, the insights of the mystics and the experience of ordinary, vibrant women and men living in our midst. She offers suggestions of words to use and rituals to experience to help us awaken to prayer to see that separation from Divine Mystery is an illusion and that the spiritual life is a journey that lasts a lifetime. That journey itself is home, and prayer is foundational as we travel.

    BAD GIRLS OF THE BIBLE

    $12.95

Women everywhere marvel at those good girls in Scripture Sarah, Mary, Esther but on most days, that s not who they see when they look in the mirror. Most women (if they re honest) see the selfishness of Sapphira or the deception of Delilah. They catch of glimpse of Jezebel s take-charge pride or Eve s disastrous disobedience. Like Bathsheba, Herodias, and the rest, today s modern woman is surrounded by temptations, exhausted by the demands of daily living, and burdened by her own desires.
So what s a good girl to do? Learn from their lives, says beloved humor writer Liz Curtis Higgs, and by God s grace, choose a better path. In "Bad Girls of the Bible, " Higgs offers a unique and clear-sighted approach to understanding those other women in Scripture, combining a contemporary retelling of their stories with a solid, verse-by-verse study of their mistakes and what lessons women today can learn from them.
Whether they were Bad to the Bone, Bad for a Season, but Not Forever or only Bad for a Moment, these infamous sisters show women how "not" to handle the challenges of life. With her trademark humor and encouragement, Liz Curtis Higgs teaches us how to avoid their tragic mistakes and joyfully embrace grace.

BECOMING A GODDESS OF INNER POISE

    product image
    $14.95

The first book to extend the Chick Lit genre in an entirely new direction spirituality Bridget Jones's Diary took the world by storm because a generation of smart, educated, career-oriented women saw their own lives reflected in the quirky, lovable, and clever Bridget who journaled obsessively about her career, her love life, and her calorie intake. But spirituality books have had little to say to the Bridget Jones crowd until now. Author Donna Freitas has her finger on the pulse of the spiritual issues that most concern today's young women. Becoming a Goddess of Inner Poise explores eleven themes (career, love, body-image, biological clock, and beyond) that parallel most women's spiritual journeys. Using the experiences of Bridget Jones and other popular heroines from books, movies, and TV, Freitas illustrates how our life choices can have a profoundly spiritual dimension, giving young women a new model for their spiritual journey, rooted in self-awareness, forgiveness, grace, prayer and uniquely a dash of humor. Donna Freitas (Vermont) is Professor of Spirituality at St. Michael's College in Colchester, Vermont, and the owner of an enviable shoe collection. Her research and speak
